Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra perform, critique students work | University of Hawaiʻi System News

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa music composition students are required to compose several original pieces spanning different genres, including orchestral works. Having a live orchestra perform those works is an integral part of the learning experience, however, some students do not get to hear their creations played by live musicians, much less a professional orchestra. In late June 2021, four UH Mānoa students and one Leeward Community College student were selected by their professors to receive a valuable learning opportunity of having the world-renowned Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra ( HSO) play their pieces and give their feedback. HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - When the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra launched its concert series in May, that marked the first shows at the iconic Waikiki Shell in more than a year. But the symphony is also sharing the iconic outdoor venue with hundreds of birds who moved in when it was shut down for 15 months during the pandemic. “There’s holes up there where the birds are coming in and roosting,” said HSO executive director Dave Moss. “We’re getting droppings on our musicians. We’re getting nesting falling down.”

How Honolulu s Resilient Performing Arts are Handling the Pandemic

T he year 2020 looked like it would be a good one for Hawai‘i’s performing arts industry. Diamond Head Theatre and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth were financially stable and expanding their audiences, Kumu Kahua Theatre was preparing for its 50th season, the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra welcomed a new director, and the Hawai‘i Opera Theatre was working on making its opera more relevant to the Islands.   Then, the coronavirus forced them to lower their curtains midseason. Stay-at-home and social distancing mandates shut down in-person performances, and while the organizations were assisted by Paycheck Protection Program loans and other financial support, revenues shrank.
