WINNIPEG The province’s current public health orders restricting gatherings on private property seem to have people heading to their favourite park to gather with friends and family they otherwise couldn’t see. Under the current measures, you can’t have people over or visit at someone else’s house, inside or outside, with an exception for people who live alone. Restaurants and patios were also forced to close Sunday. The orders currently limit group gatherings in public places to a maximum of five people. Dave Domke, the City of Winnipeg’s manager of parks and open space, said parks are seeing increased usage.

Challenge remains sapling-sized success

As part of a project to add one million trees to Winnipeg by 2040, just 9,150 trees have been planted.

Less than 10,000 trees have been planted over the last year as part of Winnipeg’s Million Tree Challenge.
Trees Winnipeg, which is overseeing the Million Tree Challenge, shared that figure on Wednesday.
Mayor Brian Bowman announced the initiative in September 2019, with a target to add one million trees by the time Winnipeg’s population reaches one million people.
The mayor said the work done so far is impressive, given that pandemic health restrictions have prevented mass tree-planting efforts for many months.

SAMPLER: Girl Scouts hold houseware, linen collection

State Rep. Danielle Gregoire recently joined a local Girl Scout troop as the Marlborough/Hudson Girl Scouts hosted a Giving from the Heart housewares and linen collection in order to replenish goods at the Fresh Start Furniture Bank, 16 Brent Drive, Hudson.
“The girls worked hard and made a dent, but Fresh Start still needs your help,” stated Gregoire.
One of the missions of Girl Scouts is to take action and make the world a better place. To fulfill this mission, the girls are reaching out into the community and taking action by partnering with Fresh Start Furniture, formerly of Marlborough.
