VERNON AND MONROE COUNTIES - Vernon and Monroe counties took another step toward pursuing updates and revisions to their manure storage ordinances. The two counties held a joint meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 24, and heard a presentation from DATCP’s Land Resource Management Section Chief Jennifer Heaton-Amrhein.

DAWS funding is approved by Land Conservation Committee Crawford County CRAWFORD COUNTY - At their January 12 meeting, the Crawford County Land Conservation Committee Soil and Water Concerns (LCC) voted unanimously to approve full funding for the spring testing for the Driftless Area Water Study. This means that the LCC will fully fund up to 100 additional well water tests in the spring of 2021. This will be a maximum cost of $5,500, with each test costing $55. Results of the 89 Fall 2020 tests were reported by County Conservationist Dave Troester: • 22 of the 89 (25 percent) tests were positive for coliform bacteria, with four of the 22 tests also testing positive for e.Coli. The four tests positive for e.Coli represent 4.5 percent of all tests, which is above the statewide average.

More wells will be sampled as part of the DAWS initiative in the spring of 2021. Crawford, Richland and Vernon counties embarked upon a study of well water quality following release of the Southwest Wisconsin Groundwater and Geology (SWIGG) study results. Those results showed significant problems with drinking water quality in Grant, Iowa and Lafayette counties. The DAWS team, composed of Land Conservation Department staff, Public Health Staff, and private conservation group members from the three counties, met for over a year to prepare to launch the study. Securing the funding to conduct two rounds of testing took some time and effort. The first round was originally scheduled for April of 2020, but was postponed to late October due to the COVID-19 pand
