The changes mean the council will also have a dedicated climate change role for the very first time. Former deputy leader Mike Wharton looks certain to be officially unveiled as the authority’s new leader after Friday’s meeting of Full Council, replacing Rob Polhill who has held the position for the last 11 years.

The warning comes after a Halton resident received a scam text. Cllr Dave Cargill, Halton Borough Council s executive board member for trading standards, said: If you or somebody you know has been caught out by a scam or fraud please contact one of our specialist officers, Linda or Sue on 0151 511 8785 or 0151 511 8775, who are already working with people in Halton who have lost thousands of pounds to scams. Some examples of scam text messages can be ones asking you to reschedule a delivery, pick up a parcel, or telling you to pay for a parcel waiting for delivery. Gary Cargill, who played newspaper editor John Smith in the 2018 film Peterloo and appeared in shows such as Hollyoaks and cop drama Safe House, is standing as the Green Party candidate in the May 6 elections. Son of longstanding Halton Labour councillors Ellen and Dave Cargill, he will also be running as a Green candidate in the borough’s council elections in the Mersey and Weston ward.
