An ode to Chris 'Zithulele' Mann: poet, teacher and cultural icon

Sandile Ngidi recalls the life of a man whose art reflected on the essence of our humanity. Chris “Zithulele” Mann was a leading South African-English poet, teacher and cultural icon. His prayerful and joyous poems offer deep reflections on apartheid times, nature, God, the cosmos and the inevitability of death. After being diagnosed with cancer last year, he died peacefully at his home in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, on Wednesday morning surrounded by his loved ones – his wife, the visual artist Julia Skeen; his two adult children, Luke and Amy; and close family friends. “Dear Chris died just over an hour ago, at 9.35am,” wrote Michael Shipster in a WhatsApp group update on Wednesday. Shipster was married to Mann’s only sibling, his sister Jackie, who also died of cancer last year.

Ulverston Food Waste Project receives £7,000 donation

The Ulverston Food Waste Project has now used the funds to improve their facilities. They bought two commercial-sized fridges, following the donation by the High Winds Community Energy Society. It follows as the Ulverston Food Waste Project launched an appeal during the first lockdown. The appeal urged people for more donations to help fellow residents in their local community. John Millen, from High Winds, believes the food waste project has made a great impact in the town. He said: “This project and its appeal ticked many boxes for High Winds. A local charity which not only helped out the most vulnerable but reduced waste and the environmental issues associated with the growing surplus food problem.
