The 67-year-old scientist, who began part-time as director at Mote Marine Laboratory’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration in 2018, ultimately retired that year to start the nonprofit Plant a Million Corals Foundation.
The week surrounding Earth Day 2021 marked the limited release of “Active Coral Restoration: Techniques for a Changing Planet,” a book he edited and co-wrote with dozens of contributing authors.

APRIL 29, 2021 In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in May, The New York Public Library today released its Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Reading List, featuring book recommendations for adults, young adults, and children. The list curated by library staff members includes titles written by AAPI authors, and that celebrate and foster a better understanding of the AAPI experience.

The list is part of the Library s ongoing efforts to fight ignorance, and hate by connecting the public to trusted knowledge and information always important, but taking on special meaning this year, with a recent rise of violence against members of the AAPI community.
Crawford called the legal issue, in which the county s 2018 assertion that beaches historically have been accessed by the public has been challenged by beachfront property owners asserting private property rights, the elephant in the room in terms of helping to assure that the department s beach safety personnel can respond quickly to emergencies in the Gulf of Mexico.
The chief punctuated his point by noting that the four recent drowning deaths in three incidents all occurred on privately held sections of beach at least a half-mile from lifeguard towers on publicly held sections of the beach.
By way of comparison, South Walton Fire District Beach Safety Director David Vaughan told commissioners that in the past 16 years there had been just one drowning on a public beach staffed with lifeguards.
