If there’s one principle that should be a fixed star in America’s schools, it’s that educators should be expected to do all they can to help each student develop their gifts and fulfill their potential. This should serve as education’s version of medicine’s Hippocratic Oath.
Regrettably, California has decided to push educators to violate that oath.
In a well-meaning but hugely misguided effort to promote equity, the state’s Instructional Quality Commission earlier this year adopted a new Mathematics Framework that urges schools to do away with accelerated math programs in order to promote “heterogeneous grouping” of students.
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Sep 18, 2020 / 12:10 pm (CNA).- After San Francisco’s archbishop called on the city to reopen churches for indoor Masses, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said he should listen to the “science,” but admitted she had recently attended a church service in the city, possibly in violation of public health orders.
“With all due respect to my archbishop, I think we should follow science on this,” Pelosi told reporters at a press conference at the U.S. Capitol on Friday.
“I don’t know if [San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone] was speaking as our pastor or as a lobbyist advocate. But whatever it is, I am sure that he must have meant [reopen churches] if it is scientifically safe, rather than jeopardizing people’s health if they want to go to Church,” she added.
The Bruce D. Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization at the University of Colorado Boulder quietly named next year’s visiting scholar and its first sabbatical scholar recently. The news should matter to anyone who cares about fostering diversity of viewpoint in higher education.
I have been closely aligned with the Benson Center as a two-term member of the CU Board of Regents, a volunteer at the center and also as an engaged citizen who regularly attends its events. I was involved in the initial discussions and planning for the center during my time as regent.
Most important, I have a deep belief that higher education plays a crucial role in our society to promote critical thinking. And the Benson Center lives up to that ideal.

The harrowing sight was captured on cellphone video and shows Sharma in the backseat of the vehicle that is traveling along Interstate 880 with no driver in sight. It’s just so dangerous.
