Yapp To Share Expertise, Passion At Workshops

By Editor | May 12, 2021 By MARK EVANS Windows are to be repaired, not replaced, says historic preservationist Bob Yapp. “In 160-plus properties I’ve been involved in restoring, I’ve never replaced a window,” Yapp told the Herald. “The big lie in America today is that you should replace your windows.” Yapp will share his passion and expertise on window repair, as well as wood siding repair, during special workshops in Ste. Genevieve this weekend. The historic preservation workshops will be held May 14-16, sponsored by the Ste. Genevieve Heritage Commission. The May 14 workshop will be a classroom session and will be 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Heritage Commission Approves Four Requests

By Editor | May 5, 2021 By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Only one of four requests for certificates of appropriateness drew much debate during the April 19 Ste. Genevieve Heritage Commission meeting. Three of the four passed by unanimous 5-0 votes. The one that generated some disagreement was Larry Wilson’s request to install vinyl siding and metal soffit and fascia on the residence at 242 Washington. Wilson presented some sample materials and answered some questions regarding the proposed installation. Wilson said he has seen a house with the proposed vinyl siding with wood appearance. He said, “It will look sharp.” “The house now has an old slate or asbestos siding,” Wilson said. “We’re going to go right over that and retain it there.”
