Medical research, after COVID-19 success, enjoys its star turn

Scientists at UND and beyond are excited about two superantigens and their benefits. Written By: Sam Easter/Special for Prairie Business | 8:00 am, May 11, 2021 × David Bradley, associate professor of biomedical sciences at the University of North Dakota, with graduate student Nathan Velaris in a research lab at the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences.Image: Eric Hylden/Grand Forks Herald For years, medical researchers at the University of North Dakota and beyond have been working on how to fight cancer more effectively with “superantigens” – substances that produce a powerful immune response in the body. And this year, scientists are especially excited about a recent discovery: two superantigens that, along with a “helper” molecule, decrease tumors and dramatically lengthen the lives of mice with cancer – and crucially, do it without the negative side effects that often come with superantigen treatments.

UND medical researchers publish study on new way to treat solid tumor cancers

UND medical researchers publish study on new way to treat solid tumor cancers Researchers with UND’s biomedical sciences department have identified two new members of the “superantigen” family that, when combined with a common “helper” molecule, showed significantly higher cure rates in and long-term survival of animals with solid tumors compared to other immunotherapeutic agents now deployed clinically.  7:00 am, Jan. 27, 2021 × Peter Knopick was the principal graduate student and then postdoctoral fellow on the published work. He is now a faculty member at Winona State. Submitted photo A team of researchers at UND’s medical school have found a new way to treat solid tumor cancers.

GF News Forward: Group battles Oslo flood problem, El Roco slates Last Call party

Herald reporters cover events on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Written By: Kim Wynn | × Journalist Ann Bailey reports on an upcoming bridge replacement project in Oslo that presents an opportunity to mitigate the spring flooding that is a perennial problem on the Red River north of Grand Forks. The severe flooding has resulted in Minnesota governors several times during the past few decades sending in the National Guard to help battle the water from reaching Oslo, which often becomes an island. The effort being pushed forward by the Border Township Associative Group, with members from North Dakota and Minnesota, includes replacement of two highway bridges, a railroad bridge and channel work, with an estimated cost of $96.7 million.
