GRAND LEDGE - Marcus Davenport was a student at Michigan State University majoring in political science when he first thought about a career in education.
A volunteer stint at a Lansing elementary school convinced him to consider teaching. What most appealed to him then, the challenge, still drives his career as an administrator two decades later. My goal was to always work in challenging environments, Davenport, 43, said.
For the last four years he s been at the helm of Beecher Community Schools, a small school district of fewer than 700 students north of Flint. When he took the job as superintendent there, Davenport said, the district was $1.5 million in debt and enrollment numbers were dropping rapidly.

Grand Ledge A 9-year-old boy on a bike was struck by a school bus and killed outside a school in Eaton County, authorities said.
The incident occurred Monday afternoon outside Neff Kindergarten Center in Grand Ledge. Malachi Williams was in fourth grade at Beagle Elementary School.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to the family, friends of the family and all in the GLPS community,” interim Superintendent David Chapin said in a note to parents.
Counselors were at schools Tuesday to support students and staff.
Grand Ledge police were investigating the crash, although negligence by the bus driver doesn’t appear to be the cause, Chief Thomas Osterholzer said.

Board members voted unanimously to make Davenport the district s next leader during a meeting Wednesday night. He is currently the superintendent of Beecher Community Schools north of Flint.
Davenport was picked from a group of three finalists, including Hazel Park School District Superintendent Amy Kruppe and Steven Gabriel, Grand Ledge Public Schools assistant superintendent of human resources and operations.
Each trustee expressed difficulty picking between the three candidates. But Davenport s infectious energy made him stand out to Board of Education President Sara Clark Pierson.
