The new Netflix series âMy Loveâ is among the most intimate, richest and most thought-provoking things Iâve seen on the screen in years. Each of the six episodes follows a couple over the course of a year; each couple lives in a different country â and all the couples have been together for at least 40 years.
I became curious about the series when Vermont Public Radio ran a brief interview with the director of the first episode, which follows Ginger and David Isham of Williston. While at first the Ishams seem to lead a picture-book Vermont life, making maple syrup with their family in the sugarhouse behind their beautiful farmhouse, the film is both touching and light-hearted as it quietly raises profound questions about aging. A well-known Williston couple is featured in a Netflix documentary series premiering today.
David and Ginger Isham are the focus of the first episode of “My Love,” a six-part series created by Korean director Jin Moyoung. Filmmakers follow a year in the life of couples who have been together for between 43 and 60 years. The Ishams are the only couple from the United States in the series, which also follows pairs from Spain, Japan, Korea, Brazil and India.
Directed by Elaine McMillion Sheldon, the episode featuring the Ishams opens with them walking out of their home to the maple-sugar house at Isham Family Farm, which has been in the family since 1871. The 65-minute film follows the couple from sugaring season in late winter through spring, summer, fall and into the holiday season of the following winter.
