PBS idyllic All Creatures Great and Small restores our sorely tested faith in humanity

comments Even as I watched the animated introduction to PBS Masterpiece s All Creatures Great and Small, which features a small automobile zipping through rolling green hills dotted with fleecy sheep, I felt my jaw unclench and my shoulders drop just a bit. The series, which is based on the beloved books by Alf Wight (under the nom de plume James Herriot), promises from the outset to be tremendously cozy the television equivalent of a chunky sweater knit from oatmeal-colored yarn.  But All Creatures doesn t just stop at being pleasant in a wholesomely British kind of way. Coursing through the entire seven-episode series is such an amount of heart, the kind that ensures that goodness and decency inevitably win the day, that it will leave you yearning for better times, especially amid the unprecedented stress the last year has brought us.

PBS All Creatures Great and Small aims to be timely tonic | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 9, 2021 LOS ANGELES (AP) “All Creatures Great and Small,” a beloved TV series of yore, is back as a reboot because producer Colin Callender saw the seriocomic adventures of veterinarians in a close-knit rural community as tonic for a politically divisive era. Then the pandemic arrived, and a series knitted together with vivid characters, engaging stories and the beautifully filmed British countryside and, of course, lots of animals, farm and otherwise provided more reason to revive the world depicted by author James Herriot. Herriot was the pen name for James Alfred “Alf” Wight, who began working as a novice vet in northern England’s Yorkshire area in 1940, kept at it for five decades, and drew on his experiences for his 1970s and ’80s semi-autobiographical works.
