(WECT) - North Carolina’s Department of Public Safety has agreed to release at least 3,500 people in state custody within the next six months to settle a lawsuit filed by civil rights organizations. The state conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and American Civil Liberties Union argued that conditions at state prisons amid the coronavirus pandemic were unconstitutional. According to the DPS dashboard, the number of offenders that have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic reached 9,632 as of February 26. Of the 47 offenders that have died, four deaths happened at the Pender Correctional Institution and two occurred at Tabor Correctional Institution.

(WECT) - A few weeks ago, Tabor Correctional had hundreds of active cases of the virus, at one point having the most in the state, but that number has since dropped to just four active cases. According to DPS, 548 people have recovered from the virus in the correctional institution. Chief medical officer for the NC Division of Prisons Dr. Arthur Campbell says the past several months have been a struggle, with Tabor Correctional seeing record case numbers and even two inmate deaths in the facility, but the work continues to implement protective protocols and stop the spread of the virus.

It has been a brutal month for Tabor Correctional Institution. Located west of Wilmington, Tabor has experienced the worst COVID-19 outbreak of any North Carolina prison, with more than 670 inmates and staff members testing positive so far. Over the past 15 days, the prison s two top leaders have died. One of them — associate warden Julian Priest, a 29-year veteran of the state prison system — died from coronavirus complications on Dec. 24, his son confirmed. The prison s warden, 46-year-old Brad Perritt, also died, on Dec. 15. Prison officials did not disclose the cause of Perritt s death, saying they can t discuss the medical issues of employees.
