Dane Co Sheriff s Office warns of family accident phone scam

MADISON, Wis. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is warning of another phone scam in the county trying to convince people a family member has been in an accident and is being held in jail. The Sheriff’s Office says the scammers claim the family member won’t be released until a large amount of cash is provided for bond, while someone else on the line poses as an attorney and tells the person receiving the call not to tell anyone about the incident. A courier will then show up in person to collect the money. The Sheriff’s Office says if the scam is successful in getting money from the victim, the scammers will continue to try to get more money from them by playing on emotions, saying the family member is hurt and needs help.

Most of the children infected had mild symptoms, according to health officials. They say the outbreak underscores the importance of getting kids in childcare and school settings tested for the virus.
