McDonald’s said that in 2008 it eliminated long chain PFAS, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), from all guest packaging globally. Between 2013 and 2015, the company eliminated bisphenol A, or BPA, and phthalate chemicals from its packaging.
The fluorinated chemicals have
come under increasing scrutiny for their impact on the environment and the body. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are a family of about 5,000 man-made organic chemicals used in non-stick cookware, fabric stain-protective coatings, fast-food wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, personal care products and firefighting foams.
