Priti Patel is under fresh pressure after being accused of appearing to have misled parliament on proposed powers to crack down on protests and, separately, issuing a statement on her asylum bill that does not seem to be supported by evidence.
Both interventions from the home secretary were used to justify some of the most controversial aspects of her bills on policing and the asylum system, which have both been criticised as either undemocratic or cruel.
The developments emerge days after Patel was accused by England footballer Tyrone Mings of âstoking the fireâ for racists to abuse his teammates after she dismissed taking the knee as âgesture politics.â

Fresh tree and peatland action plans expected from Defra tomorrow, as Royal Family announces tree planting project to mark Queen s 70th Jubilee
Higher tree planting targets, a ban on peat-based garden compost, and corridors for biodiversity protection next to rivers are among a flurry of conservation measures expected to be unveiled by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) tomorrow, reports suggest.
Environment Secretary George Eustice is set to announce plans to treble tree planting rates in England over the course of the current Parliament to around 7,000 hectares of woodland per year, in a bid to boost biodiversity and support the UK s net zero emissions goal, according to Defra.
The number of new trees planted across the UK per year is set to rise to 143 million by 2035 in a massive bid to meet climate targets.
The ambitious programme, easily the biggest in 50 years, will see a doubling of the planting of woodland to almost 80 million in the next four years.
Due to be published in the next two weeks, the plan will controversially turn swathes of farmland, areas of natural beauty and even national parks into forest.

The initial focus is cities and towns, with the Government today announcing an urban tree challenge fund that will see 44,000 trees planted near schools, hospitals and in deprived areas, the Sunday Times reports.
