TWO nurses faces are set to take centre stage in a new mural being painted on a York bridge close to the city’s hospital. Beverley artist Emma Garness has been specially commissioned by Network Rail to improve the look of several footbridges in York beset by graffiti. Her latest project on the railway bridge in Clifton sees a male and female nurse surrounded by medicinal plants including foxgloves and willow. Emma was hard at work throughout the weekend and the project is expected to take her several more days to complete, weather depending. Her work can already be seen elsewhere in York brightening up Love Lane footbridge in Holgate. The artwork there includes detailed mallard ducks, representing the local area and nearby nature reserve, Hob Moor.

A review of nearly 28,000 emergency department records shows less than 2% of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 suffered an ischemic stroke but those who did had an increased risk of requiring long-term care after hospital discharge. Those are the findings from a study conducted by researchers from the University of Missouri School of Medicine and MU Health Care.
The researchers teamed up with the MU Institute for Data Science and Informatics and the Tiger Institute for Health Innovation to review data from 54 health care facilities. They found 103 patients (1.3%) developed ischemic stroke among 8,163 patients with COVID-19. Comparatively, 199 patients (1.0%) developed stroke among 19,513 patients who didn t have COVID-19.

THE leaders of four political groups on City of York Council - representing 43 of the city’s 47 councillors - have united to speak out against proposals to merge the council with Selby, Ryedale and Scarborough under a devolution deal. The Liberal Democrats, Green Party, Labour and York Independents Group oppose the plans. But York’s Conservative group, which has two councillors, have said they favour plans to reorganise the region’s councils as they say it will bring efficiencies and economies of scale. When it comes to the future of our city, everyday political differences must be put aside. This is why we have come together, with one voice, to clearly say - decisions that affect York’s residents, businesses and communities, should continue to be made in York.
