GAINESVILLE, Ga, (AP) A northeast Georgia mayor says he s not seeking another term, but he s also not giving up on government service.
Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan announced this week that he won t seek a third term, but instead plans to run for the city council this fall.
Elected to the council in 2006, Dunagan told The Times that he s not running for a third term as mayor to spend more time on his business and with his family.
Dunagan said the COVID-19 pandemic harmed his dry-cleaning business.
“Had things not been like they are, I would probably run for one more term as mayor,” he said. “But COVID has taken a huge impact on my business, and my son, who basically ran the business for me when I was gone for my many duties as mayor, got another job.”

Approaching eight years on the Gainesville City Council, Sam Couvillon told The Times he hopes his “listening ear” and council experience will help him in his bid to be the next mayor of Gainesville.

“When I heard that (Mayor Danny Dunagan) wasn’t seeking reelection, I knew it was time for me to put my hat in the race,” Couvillon, who has represented Gainesville’s Ward 1 since being elected in 2013, said. “The mayor acts as a face for our city council. And I have the experience of working with and being on our great council, and I feel I would be a pretty good choice as mayor.”

Demolition has begun on the old Turner, Wood & Smith building at 100 Brenau Ave. next to the library in Gainesville.
A new parking deck will go up in its place, providing 400 more spaces for the downtown Gainesville area. The 160,513-square-foot structure will take 18 months to build.
The deck will be jointly funded by Gainesville and Hall County, with the city contributing $4 million and the county paying $5 million. Both will pay for the project with funds from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax VIII, a 1% sales tax approved by voters in 2019 that local governments can use for capital expenses and special projects.
