Vision Zero safety curriculum enters Philly schools

WHYY By Activity books aimed at children in Pre-K through 5th grade will be used to bring the Safe Routes Philly program to William Cramp and other elementary schools. (Emma Lee/WHYY) Philadelphia is bringing traffic safety into the classroom with a new curriculum designed to educate students from pre-K to high school about how to walk and bike safely on city streets. “As a major urban school district, it should come as no surprise that the majority of our students walk or take public transportation to schools,” said Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia William Hite at a launch event Monday outside of William Cramp School in Fairhill. “Because of this, it’s vitally important that our students and their families have as much access as possible to resources around safety.”

Partnerships help students thrive at Cramp Elementary

There is no better demonstration of commitment to the values of civic engagement, service learning and leadership than community partnerships that work with schools. Through local partnerships, the William Cramp Elementary School provides academic and emotional support and educational opportunities to their students and families. “Eat Right Now comes to our school and works with K-4 on nutrition lessons,” said special education teacher lead Tonya Cabeza. “We have a partnership with Christopher Hospital. They provide workshops and do grief groups as well. “We have a partnership with Shoes That Fit, they recently dropped off 50 pairs of sneakers that we will be able to hand out.

Learning is a community effort at William Cramp School

The success of the William Cramp School does not just rely on the students’ academic excellence and personal growth. At Cramp, the teachers and staff go above and beyond to support their students and make them feel special and this is continuing even through the pandemic. “We’re trying to mirror as closely as possible all of the things we would normally and regularly be doing each month throughout the school year,” said principal Deanda Logan. “Everything that we would typically do if we were in person, we’re trying to replicate it in the virtual world.” Designated a community school in 2016, Cramp has been continuing to provide community resources, academic and emotional support, and educational opportunities for students and their families. The K-5 school is located at 3449 N. Mascher Street.
