A dead owl in the Delhi zoo has been found to have been infected with bird flu, officials said on Saturday. The zoo witnessed the death of a brown fish owl in its captivity. Its cloacal, tracheal and ocular swabs were sent to the animal husbandry unit of the Delhi government for serological examination, zoo Director Ramesh Pandey said. The samples were found positive for H5N8 avian influenza virus under real-time RT-PCR test done by ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Disease (NIHSAD), Bhopal, on Friday, he said.

Photo: PTI Health09/Jan/2021 New Delhi: With reports coming in of over 200 crows dying in an East Delhi park over the past week and cases of bird flu reported in various parts of the country, the Delhi government on Saturday decided to ban the import of all live birds into the city and closed its biggest wholesale poultry market at Ghazipur for ten days.

Over 1,200 birds were found dead across the country on Saturday, including 900 in a poultry farm in Maharashtra, with the Centre saying that the outbreak of avian influenza has been reported in Uttar Pradesh, taking the total number of affected states to seven. The Centre said confirmation of bird flu in Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, is awaited as the samples have been sent for testing, it said. Besides Uttar Pradesh, the other six states where bird flu is confirmed are Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a ban on import of live birds in the national capital and closure of Ghazipur poultry market, the biggest in the city, for the next 10 days in view of bird flu scare.
