Ever wondered why the vehicle number plates looked different in shapes and fonts from region to region? You may also recall seeing movies where a makeshift mechanic in its small setup would effortlessly forge number plates from one vehicle to another.
Well, all of that has since changed when a new law was introduced by Ministry of Road Transport that mandated a new regime of High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) – by the vehicle manufacturers, from April 2019.
What transforms a regular registration plate to a high-security registration plate is a host of technical features. To protect against counterfeiting, a chromium-based hologram containing the Ashoka Chakra in blue is applied by hot stamping on the top left-hand corner of the plate on both front and rear plates. If you look closely, you will find that the letters and numerals of the license number on the plate are layered with a film bearing “INDIA” on it. New Delhi: The Delhi Transport Department has made it mandatory for vehicle owners in the national capital to install high-security registration plate (HSRP) and colour-coded stickers for all vehicles sold before April 2019. Violators in Delhi can be fined up to Rs 10,000, which is compoundable to Rs 5,500 under the amended Motor Vehicles Act.
The department circular said, General public is hereby informed that the installation of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) including the third registration mark (Colour coded sticker) on new and old vehicles registered in NCT of Delhi is a mandatory requirement.

NEW DELHI: The enforcement wing of Delhi’s Transport Department has issued 239 challans on day one of the enforcement drive against those not having High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP).
The fine for not having HSRP affixed to the vehicles is Rs 5,500. The enforcement wing collected fines of approximately Rs 13.14 lakh on the first day of the drive. Delhi Government has last month made HSRP and colour-coded fuel stickers mandatory for every vehicle. It has also launched home delivery of these plates and stickers.
The challans were largely issued in Wazirpur, Saket, Shastri Park, Paschim Vihar, Dwarka, Raj Ghat, Talkatora Stadium, Akshardham Temple, Delhi Cantt, Peera Garhi, Pusa, Shahadara Exchange, Preet Vihar, Ashok Vihar, Ridge Road, Malai Mandir/RK Puran and Metro Station East areas.
