Later this year, Surrey residents could see a police car arrive at a crime scene with both an RCMP officer and a new Surrey Police Service recruit inside.
Or, depending on where you live in Surrey, your neighbourhood might be entirely policed by the SPS before 2021 is over, while the adjacent neighbourhood could still be under the jurisdiction of the RCMP.
Those are just some of the possibilities being considered as Surrey continues its transition to a new municipal police force, Chief Constable Norm Lipinski said Wednesday.
“You could intersperse Surrey Police Service members throughout the City of Surrey in all areas. That’s one way to do it working side by side with the RCMP,” Lipinski said in a wide-ranging interview. “Or you could do it by geography, by community, by neighbourhood and you just build up that area with Surrey Police Service. And then you move on to the next area.”
