WESTERNVILLE, N.Y. It’s the talk of the Delta Lake ice fishing crowd – and most likely beyond.
Ice fisherman Casey Weissmuller, of Holland Patent, posted photos on the Delta Lake Diehards Facebook page this week of a northern pike that he said measured around 50 inches. Weissmuller said he landed the fish on this Oneida County waterway using a tip up and live shiner as bait.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is considering new, statewide fishing regulations for sunfish and crappie.
The proposed regulations call for more conservative day catch and size limits and includes a “Big Panfish Initiative” that aims to promote the growth of larger sunfish and crappie in certain, designated waterways.

This winter’s ice fishing season is underway in many parts of Upstate New York – particularly in the North Country and in the higher altitude and shallower waterways in other parts of the state.
Some impressive catches have already been reported. And once temperatures drop and safe ice forms in more areas, more are expected.
