The Federal Government has announced it plans to spend $16.4 million to improve mobile connectivity for bushfire-prone areas on the outskirts of Australia’s major cities.
The Peri-Urban Mobile Program (PUMP) is set to be unveiled in the 2021-22 Budget, where telcos and infrastructure providers will get grant funding to deploy new mobile phone infrastructure to improve mobile reception and coverage in peri-urban areas.
“Improving coverage on the peri-urban fringe will help communities access vital information during emergencies, seek help if needed and stay in touch with loved ones,” Communications minister Paul Fletcher said.
“PUMP will also improve the quality and reliability of available mobile services, providing benefits on a day-to-day basis for those living and working in these communities.”

TPG Telecom expects 5G fixed wireless delivered over millimetre-wave spectrum to act as a “mass market … NBN alternative”, underscoring the competitive pressure wireless will exert on NBN Co in coming years.
CEO Iñaki Berroeta told TPG’s first post-merger annual general meeting that the $108.2 million investment in millimetre-wave 26GHz spectrum “in all available licence areas” via a recent auction was a “strong result” and “excellent outcome for our shareholders”.
“The millimetre wave spectrum we acquired will complement our current spectrum holdings and allow us to deliver an excellent 5G experience for customers,” Berroeta said.

SpaceX has received more than 500,000 preorders for its Starlink satellite internet service and anticipates no technical problems meeting the demand, founder Elon Musk said. Only limitation is high density of users in urban areas, Musk tweeted, responding to a post from a CNBC reporter that said the US$99 deposits SpaceX took for the service were fully refundable and did not guarantee service. More of a challenge when we get into the several million user range, Musk said.
SpaceX has not set a date for Starlink s service launch, but commercial service would not likely be offered in 2021 as it had previously planned.
