Study underway on Route 1 pedestrian bridges

DelDOT in process of determining location options for safer road crossings There aren’t many pedestrian bridges in Delaware, and the only one in Sussex County is a private bridge over Route 24 linking both sides of the Baywood Greens property in Long Neck. RON MACARTHUR PHOTOS Ron MacArthur Could there be pedestrian bridges over Route 1 in the Lewes-Reboboth Beach area? During the April 26 Five Points Working Group virtual meeting, Jeff Riegner, a Delaware Department of Transportation consultant with Whitman, Requardt & Associates, said a study is underway to determine possible locations for pedestrian bridges. The idea is one of 78 recommendations formulated by the working group.

Rehoboth commissioners create parks and recreation code

Rehoboth Beach commissioners recently approved code creating a parks and recreation section regulating use of the city’s parks, including the new canal dock at Grove Park. However, not all the rules are set, which means when the dock opens in early May, it won’t be available for commercial use. It took a decade, but the new dock was completed in January. In anticipation of its opening, city staff introduced the new section of code in February. Commissioners discussed the section over a few meetings, approving it during their April 16 meeting. Nearly a quarter of funding for the $1.25 million project came in the form of a $300,000 Transportation Alternatives Program grant from the Delaware Department of Transportation.

A rare sight: Lewes canal bridge opens

Houseboat is able to motor under Rehoboth span during its journey The houseboat seems small compared to the large Lewes canal bridge, which opened around 3:45 p.m. May 6 for the vessel to pass under. RON MACARTHUR PHOTOS Ron MacArthur May 7, 2021 Although state transportation officials say the two drawbridges over the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal open 12 times a year on average, actually being there when it occurs is rare. City of Rehoboth Beach officials sent out an email that Delaware Department of Transportation had notified them about a request made to raise the Rehoboth and Lewes canal bridges between 2 and 4 p.m., May 6. DelDOT staff are responsible for maintenance and operation of the bridges.

Bayside residents, neighbors to meet with county councilman

The meeting will be at 10 a.m. at the Roxana Volunteer Fire Company’s fire hall. Bayside resident Greg Merrill said Rieley, addressing interested residents of Bayside, as well as The Refuge, Swan Cove West and other communities, will explain “how Sussex County operates and how to work together to effect change.” Due to coronavirus restrictions and space limitations, only those who have registered may attend the meeting Saturday. Originally, Bayside residents had asked a representative from the Delaware Department of Transportation to meet with them regarding an updated traffic study relative to the expanding Freeman Stage (now, the Freeman Arts Pavilion).

Dewey officials, Inland Bays apply for resiliency grant

Project would create living shoreline, stormwater retrofit at Sunset Park Dewey Beach officials and the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays have applied for a grant to create a living shoreline and stormwater retrofit at Sunset Park and the surrounding area. ELLEN DRISCOLL PHOTOS Ellen Driscoll May 5, 2021 Sunset Park and the adjacent marsh area have experienced severe erosion due to wind and wave activity and inadequate stormwater infrastructure, officials said. CIB officials say the macadam at the end of Dagsworthy Avenue has disappeared into the bay at a rate of about two feet a year. The grant would fund the creation of plans to stabilize roughly 800 feet of severely eroded shoreline along Rehoboth Bay from Sunset Park on Dagsworthy Avenue, around Ivy and Northbeach, and including the marsh in front of the Dewey Beach Lions Club on McKinley Avenue.
