Sheriff and Phone Company Warn of Shooting Birds on Phone Wires
In a press release today, Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond warned of shooting birds around phone lines.
As a result of recent damages to fiber optics cables in the county, Delaware County Sheriff Craig S. DuMond and the management of the Delhi and Margaretville Telephone Companies remind everyone that shooting at birds or animals on utility lines, as well as target shooting in the area of those utility lines, will very likely result in damages to the fiber optic cables and other critical telecommunications infrastructure. Damages to this infrastructure often leads to widespread and prolonged disruption of critical telecommunication infrastructure.
Sheriff DuMond Appeals To Community
On January 12, Delaware County Sheriff Craig S. DuMond, wrote a letter to the community at large with the theme, Let’s Work Together For A Better 2021 . He posted it on the Delaware County Sheriff s Office facebook page. See his letter below.
From a very young age I had a strong desire to help people assist those in need. This desire was especially strong for those who were victims, not of just crime, but of other unfortunate circumstances. Entering my 36th year in law enforcement, nothing has changed for me. From being an 18-year military police officer, to the privilege of being your Delaware County Sheriff, I have dedicated my life to upholding equal justice under the law, helping people and protecting victims.

Work is underway for members of Delaware Countyâs police reform committee, but has amassed criticism from members of the community.
Tasked with performing a âcomprehensive review of current police force deployments, strategies, policies, procedures, and practicesâ by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a June 20 executive order, 10 of the committeeâs 13 original members met for the first time Nov. 4 at the Delaware County Sheriffâs Office.
Absent were Delaware County District Attorney John Hubbard and public defender Joseph Ermeti, whose offices are required by the order to be represented, and Simon Purdy, an assistant professor of criminal justice at SUNY Delhi.
