A sizable number of Massachusetts residents who adopted pets during the COVID-19 pandemic have concerns about leaving their four-legged companions home alone when they return to the office full-time, according to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Bryn Rogers, assistant director of the MSPCAâs animal care and adoption centers, said in a phone interview Monday that her group last week polled 500 recent pet adopters, 24 percent of whom said theyâre concerned their pets will have separation anxiety when theyâre back at work.

Pet owners and their furry friends are likely to experience separation anxiety as life starts getting back to normal, according to a new poll conducted by MSPCA-Angell.
The survey found that nearly a quarter of 500 participants said they believe their pets will experience separation anxiety after a year of near-constant contact under the COVID-19 pandemic.
About 27% of those surveyed said they believe they also will experience emotional issues, like anxiety, when returning to work after spending a year inside.
And the pandemic also saw a rise in pet ownership, with 84% of respondents saying they purchased at least one new pet in the last year. Roughly 45% of them say they foresee having to return to the office as more and more Americans get vaccinated.
