Making a start is what 2021 is supposed to be all about on the climate action front.
After years of delay, the Government has committed to dramatically reducing carbon emissions, carbon used as shorthand for all greenhouse gases.
New climate law due shortly will empower the CCAC to propose ‘carbon budgets’ for every sector of society.
Each new budget will be progressively smaller so that, by 2050, the country should hit ‘net zero carbon’.
Some emissions will occur, but they will be offset in ways such as extra forestry because trees act as natural ‘carbon sinks’.
Some believe science will find artificial ways to suck carbon out of the atmosphere and lock it safely away but Donnelly cautions against over-reliance on technology.

OFTEN it’s difficult to see economic trends in advance with any accuracy.
For that reason I always take forecasts with more than a pinch of salt.

Not all can do job remotely
That said, it doesn’t mean you can’t look at the portents and think that there is a broad trajectory coming.
For instance, sometimes I can feel in the air that it’s going to rain. Some people with curly hair feel it on their scalp.
If you don’t have either of these sensations but notice the sky got dark and see clouds that look like they are touching down (which is rainfall in the distance) then you can take a stab at guessing it might rain.
January is normally the month when we dream of escaping the dark skies and chill of winter and plan that sun-soaked holiday, city break or long-haul adventure.
