Long before he was a rock star, Nick Mason knew that life in the fast lane was the way in which he wanted to exist. The drummer for Pink Floyd is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who’s always felt the need for speed.
The money he’s earned by being part of the one of the most legendary bands in music history has enabled Mason, 77, to satisfy his need, and then some. He owns some of the finest racing machines ever created.
A fan of all things racing, Mason embraces everything from Formula 1, to IndyCar, to vintage race cars. He probably can even quote you the latest MotoGP betting odds. But he’s much more than a mere fan of motor sports. Mason is a participant.

In 1997, Major League Baseball honored Jackie Robinson by making his No. 42 the first uniform number to be retired across the sport.
That said, players who were wearing No. 42 at the time were grandfathered in, meaning they could choose to continue wearing it until they retired. Thus, some teams have had a player wear No. 42 more recently than others and some have never handed out that uniform to anyone.

Blue Jays: Xavier Hernandez (1989)
Hernandez, a right-handed relief pitcher, made his debut with the Blue Jays in 1989 and appeared in seven games, covering 22 2/3 innings that season before the Astros selected him in the Rule 5 Draft. Toronto had drafted Hernandez in the fourth round in 86 and he developed as a starter, but came out of the bullpen for the majority of his 10-year Major League career.

While the global pandemic has preoccupied most of the world for the last 12 months, the next big problem to face the world will be the climate crisis and sustainability, writes Derek Bell.
In “The Bell and the Cat,” a fable often attributed to Aesop, a family of mice has been living in fear because of a cat. One day they come together to figure out how to defeat the cat, and after much deliberation, one young mouse gets up to suggest that they put a bell around the cat’s neck. All the other mice agree, except for one wise, old mouse who agrees with the ingenious plan, but questions “Who will put the bell on the cat?”
Think of some of the world’s finest sporting venues and there’s one element that separates the best from the rest: history. The likes of Lords, Wimbledon, Monza and Augusta National are so revered because of the opportunities they afford to add to the wonderful memories created there over the years.
While not quite as famous on a global scale, Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in Worcestershire undeniably has that magic ingredient too. It proudly bills itself as “the oldest motorsport venue in the world still using its original course”, having hosted high-speed action since August 1905.
The facility is run by the Midland Automobile Club, and as commercial manager Toby Moody says: “There is a huge sense of history and you can feel it, because back in the day the international greats raced there. There are a lot of ghosts.”
