Stick It To COVID campaign features P A Elder

A 90-year-old Elder living in Prince Albert is currently appearing in the provincial government’s Stick It To COVID campaign. A Lac La Ronge Indian Band member, Emily Cummings has her photos on billboards in Prince Albert and she’s also included in a recently published 30-second YouTube video. The series of Stick It To COVID advertisements feature real Saskatchewan people talking about what the vaccine means to them and why they are looking forward to a return to normal. Cummings has already received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. “They said it was a good thing to get it so you won’t get really sick or maybe you can live a little bit longer,” she said. “I love my grandchildren, especially the little ones and I thought I’ll get these needles they want to give me, so maybe I’ll see my grandchildren grow up a little bit bigger before I am gone.”

Provincial budget includes restoration funds for historic church

Provincial funds will ensure a National Historic Site of Canada will be preserved and enjoyed for future generations to come. The Holy Trinity Anglican Church near Stanley Mission wasn’t forgotten in Tuesday’s budget as approximately $180,000 was approved for preparation, painting, finishing and some refurbishing to the interior and exterior of the church. Work at the site is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2021. According to information from the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport, the church was built between 1854 and 1860, and has been in use ever since. “It’s been a big part of the community,” said Stanley Mission director of operation Gordon Hardlotte. “The whole community uses it quite a bit for weddings and special services.”

Mediation offer declined by local woman facing multiple charges

A local woman facing charges stemming from an incident in December at the La Ronge Health Centre has, for now, declined to move forward with mediation. Emily Kammermayer was in court on Monday where the Crown offered her the opportunity to pursue mediation via alternative measures to have her charges withdrawn. She is charged with assaulting three officers, assault with a weapon and resisting arrest. So far, she has represented herself in court and has not yet entered a plea. “I wouldn’t have a criminal record after completing mediation and I’m undecided at this time if I want to do mediation,” Kammermayer said. “I have yet to even see my disclosure and I would like to look at the facts of the case before I can make a decision on whether or not I would like to continue to go ahead with trial or going ahead with mediation.”

Northern educator receives U of R Professional Achievement Award

With more than 30 years of service in the education field, Rosalie Tsannie-Burseth was honoured recently with a University of Regina Professional Achievement Award. Tsannie-Burseth became a teacher in 1987 after spending time at the Northern Teacher Education Program in La Ronge. She started as a Kindergarten teacher at Wollaston Lake School and later served as a vice-principal, principal and finally the director of education until she left the community in 2007. “I have always made sure language and culture was first and foremost,” Tsannie-Burseth said. “I did my master’s degree at the U of R in 2001. I did my masters there and I did it in curriculum and instruction with the idea I will be working and developing curriculum for language and culture.”
