The Tompkins County Public Safety Committee agreed to opt into the stateâs new hunting law which will allow children between the ages of 12 and 13 to participate in big game hunting. The change comes with certain requirements, such as the close accompaniment of a trained mentor or parent and the wearing of blaze orange apparel with a 360 degree view.Â

ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is hiring. Sheriff Derek Osborne tells WHCU a depleted roster of deputies is taking a toll – especially between the pandemic and public safety reform efforts.
“I’m really starting to see in the sheriff’s office the strain this is taking on our deputies and corrections officers, says Osborne.
It’s a tough challenge to continue keeping the public safe, but Osborne says they are committed to their work even if it means the sheriff’s personally responding to calls. Despite the obstacles, Osborne says morale among his deputies remain high.
