The chosen site will be in the vacant gas station building next to Humpty’s Restaurant at 1343 Trans-Canada Way. “We’ve (wanted) to do a retail outlet in Medicine Hat for years – specifically retail, not production,” said Debbie Penner, co-owner of Premium Sausage with husband Mark.

Kneehill County council concerned about vicious dogs

  KNEEHILL COUNTY, ALTA. Kneehill County sent back their draft animal control bylaw for more research after councillors voiced concerns over the term vicious dog. The debate occurred at the May 11 regular meeting of council. Councillors were reading the proposed animal control bylaw for a few reasons, stated Debra Grosfield, manager protective services. “The Land Use Bylaw had hens added to it last year, and we need to reflect these changes in the proposed Animal Control Bylaw 1840,” stated Grosfield in her memo to council. “We also have some enforcement challenges with Bylaw 1714, the current Animal Control Bylaw.” Grosfield noted in her memo, one of the challenges included certain dogs.

Kneehill County council opt to cut salaries

Administrative staff presented Kneehill County council members with a draft policy to reduce council remunerations to aid the county in saving money amid financial hardships, which came as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, during the Tuesday, February 23 regular Kneehill County council meeting. Discussion first began in December 2020 and was brought back to council during the Tuesday, January 26 council meeting where council voted in favour of administration drafting a new remuneration policy. “I like how it’s all brought back into one policy, especially Schedule A showing a decrease of 15 per cent roughly,” said Councillor Debbie Penner. According to council expense reports, each council member receives an annual base pay remuneration of $27,958; the Reeve and Deputy Reeve receive base pay of $36,468 and $31,605 respectively.

Paid parking pilot implemented at Horseshoe Canyon

Amendments to Kneehill County’s master rates bylaw to implement a paid parking pilot at Horseshoe Canyon could attract approximately $40,000 in revenue. Public lands coordinator Shelby Sherwick presented the proposal during the Tuesday, February 9 regular Kneehill County council meeting. “The Town of Drumheller completed a pilot project for paid parking in 2019 and continued initiative in 2020 at their Hoodoos tourism site,” Sherwick said during the meeting. “Based on reports regarding the Town of Drumheller’s pilot project, there may be potential to see similar revenues at Horseshoe Canyon with the introduction of a similar model.” The program at the Hoodoos raised more than $27,000 in 2019; despite reduced tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic, about $19,000 was raised in 2020.
