Some small businesses falling in the cracks of relief packages

“We closed on March 18, Hopkins recalled. It was a Wednesday. I will forever remember that date. As a new business owner, she said she hadn’t started taking an income yet.  I was right on the edge of doing that in March when everything kind of turned upside down, she added. So, Hopkins, like others in her position, immediately applied for the PPP loan and other grants. While she was able to get funding through the PPP, she was able to support her two employees but ran into other issues. Hopkins said her monthly rent is three times more than her monthly payroll expense and added the loan wasn t as helpful as it was for other businesses.

Winning gingerbread houses on display in downtown South Bend By: Maura Johnson SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Downtown South Bend selected the winners of their annual 2020 Gingerbread Village Competition on Dec. 19, and you still have time to see the winning houses. Winners were chosen in four categories: non-professional child (18 and under), non-professional (individual, family, or group), professional (individual or group), and people’s choice. The people’s choice winner was based on public voting held at the Courtyard by Marriot in downtown South Bend from Dec. 4 to Dec. 18. Judges from The Ragamuffin and Pink Lemonade Pastries bakeries determined the winners of the other categories.
