En español | When Jim Oricchio s grandson Sammy was diagnosed with autism at age 3, his family worried the boy wouldn t make friends, would struggle to communicate and wouldn t do well in school.
Instead, Sammy captained his high school bowling team, founded the school s computer club and cohosted a podcast about autism. Now 20, he s into cars and the stock market, and attends college. Along the way, Oricchio and his wife Donna, who have 11 grandchildren, have helped Sammy s parents with the cost of his private school, advocated for services and connected with him through activities like twice-monthly lunches.

When the storm descended on Texas beginning on Valentine’s Day, many people turned on their heat only to discover that they had no power, some for as long as 50 hours. People died. Homes and businesses suffered great damage, and water supplies are still not fully restored for many.
A disastrous combination of factors turned this weather event into a dire emergency for millions when the extreme cold caused the electrical grid in Texas to come very close to total collapse.
Climate change likely made the extreme cold weather last longer than predicted. Deregulation of Texas energy in the 90s led energy companies to cut costs to protect infrastructure from unlikely weather events. And the go-it-alone Texas way meant there was no surplus or backup energy available.

For the 81 million people who voted for change on November 3, yesterday’s inauguration of President Joe Biden was deeply satisfying. The challenges are immense and the fissures dividing people wide, but we know that this man cares deeply for the people of this country and will do his best. He’s been preparing for this for a long time and has spent recent months recruiting an impressive team of professionals to find ways to address the multiple crises we face.
The Biden team understands that the economy won’t recover until the virus is under control and many were reassured by his recent decision to make the science advisor a member of the cabinet.
