The La Jolla Music Society has terminated its longtime director of finance, Chris Benavides, after it said it had discovered losses of approximately $113,000.
The organization said Benavides maintained he had accidentally accessed a La Jolla Music Society account. The nonprofit filed a police report on Sunday in which it alleged he used the money for personal expenses.
Police spokesman Scott Lockwood confirmed to the Union-Tribune on Tuesday that a report has been taken and that the department’s economic crimes unit has been notified.
After completing its investigation, the unit will present any evidence it has gathered to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. The office will determine whether to file charges.
