NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) â The Tennessee State Veterinarian s Office announced four horses in the state have tested positive for Potomac Horse Fever.
Cases were confirmed in Hawkins, Robertson, Sullivan and Wilson County. The horse diagnosed with PHF in Wilson County had to be euthanized last month.
PHF is caused by bacteria thought to be carried by aquatic snail larvae and other hosts such as flies. Horses living near bodies of water or low-lying areas that could collect stagnant water are at risk. The state veterinarian s office says owners can lower the risk of exposure by providing clean drinking water and turning off insect-attracting stable lights at night.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –According to a news release from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, the Tennessee State Veterinarian issued a warning to citizens of a disease that can be fatal to rabbits.
The outbreak of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (RHDV2) has been detected near the Tennessee border in Arkansas. The release states that no cases have actually been found in Tennessee.
The announcement is an attempt to make rabbit owners and hunters aware of the disease in an effort to use caution with their domestic rabbits and while hunting rabbits. They should also be aware of the heightened risk of the disease.

MONTEREY, Tenn. (WTVF) â The investigation into the deaths of dozens of cows found in a field in Putnam County in late February revealed the animals died as a result of starvation.
Initially, investigators thought the animals had been poisoned or shot, but the Tennessee State Veterinarian s Office confirmed the bovines starved to death, according to the Putnam County Sheriff s Office.
Sheriff Eddie Farris is disgusted by what happened and says he wants the public to know how important agriculture is in Putnam County, and that this is an isolated incident.
The Tennessee State Veterinarian confirmed positive cases of respiratory equine herpesvirus in Knox and Shelby Counties, with additional suspect and exposed horses.
