Maury school board removes comment period for teachers

During school board budget meetings last week, MCEA representatives highlighted the desire for teacher raises, which have not been given by the board since 2017.  MCEA representatives told the school board that a raise for teachers is much needed, especially following a tough year amid COVID-19. In contrast, the Maury County Commission is proposing a 5% raise for all county employees.  During the budget meeting last week, MCEA president Stephanie Sparks-Newland read the children s story, “Swimmy,” by Leo Lionni to the board, emphasizing the need for teacher raises in a tough environment amid COVID-19. Fellow teachers attended the meeting, reciting in unison the book s catch phrase, just keep swimming, illustrating the idea that teachers must keep going despite no increase in compensation.

CarVaughn Page: All Day Every Day

Share At Tennessee State University, I went to Courtyard Wednesday, where different campus organizations set up tables to promote their programs. I saw the Aspiring Ed table, talked to some members, and I signed up that day. It’s been a wonderful experience that I’ve carried into my master’s program. Our Aspiring Ed program here does an excellent job at community outreach, and we have a great partnership with our state affiliate, the Tennessee Education Association. We organize food drives and donate what we collect to a local school. We visit different elementary schools and mentor students. We show them what college students look like and what campus life is like.

Educator of the Week: Jennifer Alford

WBBJ TV April 9, 2021 GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. It’s time to recognize this week’s Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.  Jennifer Alford has only been teaching for three years. However, she has known since she was a child that it is what she wanted to do.  “My sister had a learning disability when she was younger. Seeing her struggle and helping her with that really encouraged me to become a teacher,” Alford said. Alford is now teaching multiple subjects to her fourth grade class at Milan Elementary School. She loves what she does but says it isn’t the easiest job sometimes – especially at the beginning.
