Facebook’s hiring practices and promotions are under federal scrutiny following reports of widespread racial bias, according to Reuters. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has launched a “systemic” investigation into the social media giant, indicating that it suspects internal policies may be contributing to a top-down culture of discrimination.

In July, Facebook operations program manager Oscar Veneszee Jr., who is Black, filed a complaint with the EEOC along with two applicants he recruited that Facebooklater rejected. A third rejected applicant joined the case in December. The complaint, which they told NPR was filed on behalf of “all Black Facebook employees and applicants to Facebook,” alleges that the company fails to provide equal career opportunities for its Black workers, employs subjective evaluations that promote racial stereotypes, and discriminates against Black candidates. Facebook s Head of Ad Integrity Leaves Company

Facebook’s chief of advertising integrity Rob Leathern has left the company, he announced in a Twitter thread Friday. Leathern came onboard shortly after President Donald Trump took office, and some of the social media giant’s more contentious ad policies, including those regarding election and coronavirus misinformation, rolled out during his tenure.

Leathern disclosed his decision on an internal company network earlier this month, saying in a post reviewed by Reuters that he was “leaving Facebook to work on consumer privacy beyond just ads and social media” and his last day would be Dec. 30.
