Art Beat features artist Alma Cummings s work

Don Wilkinson South Coast mixed media artist Alma Cummings creates complex, abstract works that incorporate oil paint and collaged elements on small panels. Working in a studio in the once-industrial Kilburn Mill at Clark’s Cove in New Bedford’s South End, she bounces back and forth between at least three ongoing series: “Pompeii,” “Star Attraction,” and “Synchrony.”  Remaining true to the principles of non-objectiveness, all three sets of work are absent clearly defined subjects. But that does not mean that the semblance of a common theme within each series does not reverberate. Of course, the “Pompeii” series references the ancient city of the Roman Empire, destroyed by a catastrophic volcano in 79 A.D. Beyond its destruction itself, Pompeii is best known for the treasure trove of blatantly erotic art found in the ruins.

A letter writer takes issue with the people, described in a column by Jonathan Kay, who blasted a neighbour who had festooned her house with holiday decorations, claiming she had erected “a reminder of systemic biases against our neighbours who don’t celebrate Christmas or who can’t afford to put up lights.” ‘Every North American city should have a Christmas tree’ I should point out that I am not of the Christian faith.
