South Coast mixed media artist Alma Cummings creates complex, abstract works that incorporate oil paint and collaged elements on small panels.
Working in a studio in the once-industrial Kilburn Mill at Clark’s Cove in New Bedford’s South End, she bounces back and forth between at least three ongoing series: “Pompeii,” “Star Attraction,” and “Synchrony.” Remaining true to the principles of non-objectiveness, all three sets of work are absent clearly defined subjects.
But that does not mean that the semblance of a common theme within each series does not reverberate.
Of course, the “Pompeii” series references the ancient city of the Roman Empire, destroyed by a catastrophic volcano in 79 A.D. Beyond its destruction itself, Pompeii is best known for the treasure trove of blatantly erotic art found in the ruins.
