The story goes that President Franklin D. Roosevelt was often forced to endure long receiving lines at White House functions. His major complaint was that no one paid any attention to what was being said as well-wishers passed.
And so, he decided to do an experiment to prove his point. As guests passed and asked how he was doing, Roosevelt replied, “Not so good. I murdered my grandmother this morning.”
The guests responded, “Marvelous. God bless you, Sir. Keep up the good work.” Near the end, the ambassador from Bolivia listened to Roosevelt, paused for a second, and then leaned close and whispered, “I’m sure she had it coming.”
