This Old Testament site is located southeast of Tel Aviv in cotton fields farmed by an Israeli kibbutz. The dig team lived in tents inside the kibbutz compound. Each day, Palestinian workers from nearby Gaza were bused in to work with us side-by-side in the trenches. My tent mate was a tank commander in the Israeli army who participated in Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon. We had many conversations about the tragic inability of Israelis and Arabs to solve their problems. One day, he told me that the really big war the Israeli army anticipated and was training for was not between themselves and such former Arab combatants  as Egypt and Jordan, but between themselves and the country with the oldest historical claim to the region: Syria.
