A pilot project will try to rein in a growing population of feral horses between Ashcroft and Logan Lake, but a cull of the herds is out of the question, a Highland Valley mine spokesman said Thursday.
The company is working with the SPCA, First Nations and the provincial government to capture and re-home the horses, Mark Freberg said. We won t capture more animals than we can find homes for, Freberg said. We definitely don t want to eliminate the herd. That isn t the point at all.
A different approach was taken by the provincial government last year in Deadman Valley near Savona, where 20 wild horses were captured and auctioned. Most were probably sold into the meat market, although a few were saved and adopted by an animal rights group.
