THOMASTON Major traffic routes in Thomaston became doubly snarled Thursday afternoon following a structure fire on Route 1 and a subsequent minor vehicle accident just down the road.
At approximately 2:05 p.m., April 8, emergency responders closed a portion of New County Road (Route 1) between Dexter Street and Old County Road after being called to a house fire at 27 New County Road, just across the street from a gas station.
Many of the firefighters from Rockland, South Thomaston, Warren, and Cushing were returning their gear to their rigs at approximately 3 p.m. when a vehicle edging along with traffic just beyond the Route 1-High Street intersection is believed to have stopped abruptly, according to Thomaston Police. The abrupt stop allegedly forced the motorcyclist following behind to lay down his bike in the roadway. The motorcyclist was eventually transported to Pen Bay Medical Center with minor injuries.
