After taking the Friday night feature with 7-5 favorite Betalady, driver Corey Callahan, aka “The Captain”, also scored in Saturday night’s (Feb. 27) marquee event, winning the $27,500 Winners Over/Open Pace with 11-1 outsider Shnitzledosomethin at The Meadowlands.
Not only did Callahan drive well, he had a big decision to make well before the race even began. Should he drive Shnitzledosomethin, or Lyons Steel, whom he guided to the winner’s circle in the weekly feature last week?
“It was a tough choice,” said Callahan. “Lyons Steel has been good to me the last few weeks, but [Shnitzledosomethin’s trainer] Dylan Davis is one of my main guys and his horse has a lot of back class. I mean, he’s won one out of every three races lifetime and he showed what he is tonight.”

According to the past performances, Lyons Steel would need a lot of things to go his way, but nonetheless survived bumping up in class to emerge victorious in Saturday night’s (Feb. 20) co-featured $22,500 winners-over $11,500 conditioned pace at The Meadowlands.
Following a perfect second-over trip, the razor sharp six-year-old gelded son of Rock N Roll Heaven-Lyons Luck blasted home off cover to pull off a 6-1 surprise, and in the process, upped his winning streak to three.
After floating away from the gate from post 5 in the seven-horse field, driver Corey Callahan had Lyons Steel in sixth at the quarter. Early leader and 5-2 second choice Italian Delight N yielded to My Pal Joe at the half in :55.3 as the flow started to develop on the rim.
Shes Pukka N won the Mares Open at Dover Downs on Wednesday night (Feb. 17).
Driver Tony Morgan left alertly as opposed to taking back off the pace last week. That strategy was a winning one.
Shes Pukka N left aggressively and relinquished the early lead to Infinite Symbol A at the quarter. Infinite Symbol N was able to control the fractions through splits of :27.2, :55.2 and 1:23.
Soho Burning Love A, the 4-5 favourite, and driver Tim Tetrick moved off the pylons past the half from last. Soho Burning Love A paced without cover to the three-quarter pole but was void of pace. Machnhope shadowed Soho Burning Love A down the backstretch but never threatened the leader.
A pair of fan favourites sat atop the marquee in the co-featured $22,500 winners-over $11,500 events on Saturday (Feb. 13) at The Meadowlands, one on the pace and the other on the trot.
Tulhurstsantanna A worked an ideal trip in pulling off a 21-1 upset in the pace. The driver of the eight-year-old gelded son of Santanna Blue Chip-Ballroom Belle had designs on leaving the gate, but Andy McCarthy thought better of it.
“I put his nose on the gate and thought about stepping out,” said McCarthy. “But I aborted that mission when I saw everybody else had the same idea and managed to work out a sweet second-over trip.”
