State Rep. Hugh Shine, R-Temple, is co-sponsoring House Bill 1246 â legislation that would shift away from attendance-based funding for public schools.
âThis will be a very important piece of legislation that we will debate in the House and well as the Senate,â Shine said during a meeting hosted by the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce on Monday.
During the meeting, Shine invited state Rep. Gina Hinjosa, D-Austin, to discuss the legislation. Hinojosa, a former president for the Austin Independent School Districtâs board of trustees, began developing HB 1246 after noticing how instruction changed during COVID-19.

HOUSTON – State and local leaders, along with health care workers, will gather Sunday to condemn and demand a “Mask Off” party at a local nightclub located on Washington Avenue be canceled.
“Having a mask off party in the middle of a city that has every potential variant of the COVID disease spreading is not only irresponsible but deadly,” said State Rep. Ann Johnson of the Texas House District 134, which includes parts of west Houston, West University and Bellaire.
The event was promoted by Concrete Cowboy and scheduled for Wednesday, the first day Gov. Greg Abbott’s order goes into effect lifting public health measures.

What has promised to be a heated race for an open U.S. House seat grew even hotter last week with the entrance of both the local Texas House representative and the widow of the former officeholder.
Entering the race on Friday was Texas House District 10 first-term Rep. Jake Ellzey of Midlothian, who had previously run for the seat in 2018, losing to Ron Wright in a runoff in the Republican primary.
Ellzey, a retired U.S. Navy fighter pilot, current airline pilot and a past Texas Veterans Commissioner, won a state House seat in November and is in Austin representing his district in the current session of the Texas Legislature.
