HISD s DOI plans DOA for now

Last September, the Houston ISD Board of Education approved the formation of a District of Innovation (DOI) committee to develop a plan for HISD to obtain the DOI designation, which would allow the district to set an earlier school start date, have flexibility from the state’s 90 percent attendance rule and increase the district’s ability to hire teachers specifically for Career and Technical Education courses. But in March, HISD’s District Advisory Committee voted it down by a margin of 21-10. What remains unknown is if there are any plans to revive it. “Members of the HISD District Advisory Committee voted not to move forward with the District of Innovation Plan,” the HISD press office said in a statement. “At this time there has been no decision on whether a new District of Innovation Plan will be presented to the committee.”

Editorial: Experienced incumbents best for NISD

Editorial: Experienced incumbents best for NISD Express News Editorial Board FacebookTwitterEmail We recommend board President Carol Harle in District 6 and Vice President Karen Freeman in District 7. For the open District 5 seat to replace incumbent Katie Reed, who is stepping down after 31 years we recommend Corinne Saldaña, a retired principal. The incumbents have long tenures as education administrators, and their expertise and commitment are vital in facing the dual challenges of COVID-19 recovery and district growth. Northside is one of the area’s fastest-growing districts, with an enrollment of more than 106,000 students. Northside voters have passed almost $2.5 billion in construction bonds since 1995.

Trustees will hold May 3 workshop at superintendent’s request to look at options Waxahachie Daily Light The Waxahachie Independent School District board of trustees considered for the first time budgeting priorities for the 2021-2022 school year with an eye on budgets farther into the future during its regular monthly meeting on Monday night. Superintendent Dr. Bonny Cain said the school district has a large number of worthy areas, but budget realities will force the board to prioritize items. For example, a desire for smaller class sizes takes money from something else, Cain said. Cain presented a list of budget items for the board to prioritize and asked the board to give feedback.
