Taaqpak 120 race to start Saturday, honoring Elder February 23rd |
The 2021 Taaqpak 120 will start Saturday at 12 p.m. Mushers will race from Kotzebue to Noatak and back through to the finish in Kotzebue. The musher entry deadline will be Wednesday. Entry fee is $120. The purse is $10,000.
The Taaqpak 120 is named in memory of Elmer Taaqpak Howarth Sr. and honors the work of the Howarth family who partnered with the Kobuk 440 Racing Association to host this race. Taaqpak was a dog musher himself. Over the years, members of the Howarth family have volunteered on the trail crew, served as timekeeper, ran the checkpoint hospitality, and encouraged community members to join in.

Employee killed by incident at Red Dog Mine January 21st |
An employee died Saturday as a result of an incident at Red Dog Mine in Northwest Alaska near Kotzebue, according to mine operator Teck Alaska Inc.
Teck Alaska wrote Sunday that a fatal incident occurred on a production drill at our Red Dog operation in Alaska in the evening of Jan. 16, resulting in the death of a 47-year-old employee.
Red Dog Mine is a large zinc and lead mine located about 80 miles north of Kotzebue. No other employees or contractors were injured, according to Teck Alaska.
The company said in a statement Sunday that there are no ongoing safety or environmental risks at the mine.
