Witherspoon Street design meeting set for May 18 -

The municipality of Princeton will host an online neighborhood meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 18 to discuss the design of Witherspoon Street from Paul Robeson Place to Valley Road. “In 2020, we began a community discussion about Witherspoon Street, focusing on the downtown area between Nassau Street and Paul Robeson. This May 2021 design meeting is intended to continue the community discussion about Witherspoon Street from Paul Robeson to Valley Road,” reads the announcement about the meeting from municipal engineer Deanna Stockton. “We are seeking your ideas and feedback for pedestrian, bicyclist, transit and motor vehicle improvements; street lighting; tree and other vegetation additions; public art; seating and other street furniture; and any other features that will enhance the vibrancy of the corridor.”.

The study is looking at the Princeton Branch right of way and travel connections to the branch, a 2.7-mile rail line that connects Princeton with Princeton Junction. The two-car train known as the Dinky currently runs along a single track in the right of way and is the shortest scheduled commuter rail line in the United States. The study will help direct the future of transit service along this corridor. The study will evaluate existing conditions and estimate future demand for public transit along the corridor, taking into consideration planned developments such as the expansion of Princeton University, as well as new and emerging transportation technologies and other trends that are changing how and when people want to travel. Elected officials had to make a choice between having traffic flow south to north or north to south on Witherspoon as part of the plan, and opted for the current south to north configuration that has been in place since June. With that choice in mind, they also want to switch the direction of South Tulane Street, which has been a one-way street for many years, Traffic flows from south to north, but officials want to reverse the direction. This would mean there would be no turns from Nassau Street onto South Tulane Street. Instead, drivers would take Spring Street and then make a right on to South Tulane. Once they reach Nassau Street, drivers would only be able to make a right turn onto the street.
