BOSTON - Instead of a compass, intrepid explorer Rachel Mead uses an ingenious digital tool named Atlascope to wander through long-vanished streets and neighborhoods of Boston, Cambridge and adjacent suburbs.
Designed by the Norman B. Leventhal Map and Education Center in the Boston Public Library and free to the public, Atlascope has digitalized 101 cumbersome street atlases of Boston and neighboring cities from 1873 to 1938 so they can be accessed on computers and cell phones to guide viewers through the past.
Like the surveyor who discovered the ruins of Pompeii 16 centuries after it was buried in volcanic ash, Mead, the center s public engagement and interpretation coordinator, has also discovered forgotten lives.

For the Gazette
Growing up in the 50s, there were always a lot of ways for a kid to make money. Seasonal gigs like snow shoveling, mowing lawns, gardening, window washing and even thimbleberry picking provided more than just pocket change. My early clients included, Mrs. Frimodig, Ms. Irene Prisk, Mr. Carlos Haug and Ms. Linda Nikula.
My other occasional jobs included delivering the “Grit” newspaper, for which E.B Pancratz had the franchise, and also delivering catalogs for the Fuller Brush Company’s Mr. Moll.
I would later graduate to my regular paperboy routes for the Daily Mining Gazette and the Sunday Milwaukee Journal. I also did window washing for several downtown stores, which helped me grow a sizeable savings account at the Houghton National Bank- with the guidance of friendly banker, Dick Rowe, to keep myself equipped with the latest sports gear and other popular goodies.

WEST CHESTER TWP. – Should West Chester Township pay to expand its MidPointe Library branch in an effort to provide more space for programming for community members of all ages?
That’s the question before trustees following a work session that included discussion with library officials, trustees and a representative from the Edge Teen Center.
Before it can be answered, township trustees would like to see options from an architect for an expansion of anywhere from 8,000 to 12,000 square feet of space. Along with that, they want cost estimates.
Township Administrator Larry Burks said the original drawings for the 50,000 square foot library, which opened in 2009, included space for an 8,000 to 12,000 square foot addition.
